How it works:
The tool uses https://openalex.org/ to identify authors and their affiliations for articles with a DOI.
The gender of authors is then analyzed based on a database of names in which we mainly predicted the gender with https://gender-api.com/en/.

A gender and national diversity index tool
The tool Diversity-x measures the gender and national diversity of references for any kind of document you submit as a PDF file, for example published scientific articles, syllabi, technical reports, or your article’s draft.
Diversity-X can easily be administered. It does not take more than five minutes to upload the PDF file you would like to get checked and to understand the results.
The gender and national diversity of the cited authors is estimated by processing DOIs. Gender diversity is measured by collecting first name information from openalex.com, and then calculating the proportion of female authors in the reference list. We have compiled a database based on name-gender combinations identified in previous studies. If you are misgendered in the author list or if your gender is missing, and you want us to correct it, please contact us to let us know and we will update our database.
The national diversity of the cited authors is estimated by referring to the software https://openalex.org/. Diversity-X also measures which decade the cited articles were published by referring to the year provided in the reference list.
Gender diversity and the fair representation of women in science are widely debated and have often been criticized in academia (Braun et al., 2023; Trepte & Loths, 2020). National diversity, i.e., an author’s country of affiliation, has also been problematized: Previous research has demonstrated that only few of the many countries in which academics are affiliated are visible in scientific outlets (Scharkow & Trepte, 2023; Trepte & Loths, 2020). Building on that programmatic, we developed Diversity-X. A tool that will provide you with evidence on the diversity of bibliographies helping to rethink citation practices. Diversity-X is open software. If you use Diversity-X for your research, then we would appreciate your including the following reference in the papers or presentation for which you used our tool:

You can use our online service without disclosing your identity. The application does not primarily process any of your personal data. The IP address for sending data packets for the technical function of the application is based on your voluntary use of our service. Without the processing of this data, the service cannot be offered.
The data uploaded by you to create the report should not contain any personal data from you directly and/or other data subjects, except for the persons cited by you. Only in this way can the evaluation display the correct result. The data uploaded by you will be deleted after the evaluation and will not be processed any further. The data is therefore not stored permanently.
Data is therefore not passed on to third parties for commercial or non-commercial purposes. Data is also not transferred to third countries. In some cases, we use a service provider within the framework of commissioned processing in accordance with Article 28 GDPR; the application is hosted by this service provider. We retain full responsibility for data processing in this case.
Liability for own content
The contents of these pages were created with the greatest care. However, we cannot accept any liability for the accuracy, completeness and topicality of the content. As a service provider, we are responsible for our own content on these pages in accordance with general legislation.

Your rights
We hereby inform you that in accordance with Article 15 et seq. In accordance with Article 77 GDPR, you also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority if you believe that the processing of your personal data violates this regulation. Right to information, Art. 15 GDPR
You have the right to request information about whether and to what extent your personal data is being processed (in particular the purpose of processing, recipients of the data, storage period, etc.).
Right to rectification, Art. 16 GDPR
You have the right to request the rectification of your stored data if it is incorrect or incomplete. This includes the right to completion by means of supplementary declarations or notifications.
Right to erasure, Art. 17 GDPR
You have the right to request the erasure of your personal data. This is possible, for example, if the data is no longer required for the purposes for which it was collected or if the data must be deleted due to legal obligations. However, this right may be excluded in individual cases.
Right to restriction of processing, Art. 18 GDPR
You have the right to have the processing of your personal data restricted. This is possible, for example, if your data has been recorded incorrectly or the data processing is unlawful. If processing is restricted, the data may only be processed in strictly limited cases.
Right to data portability, Art. 20 GDPR
You have the right to request that the data concerning you be handed over to you or to a controller designated by you in a common electronic, machine-readable data format if you have provided this data yourself.
Right to object, Art. 21 GDPR
You have the right to object, on grounds relating to your particular situation, at any time to the processing of personal data concerning you with effect for the future, provided that the data processing is carried out to safeguard legitimate interests (cf. Art. 6 para. 1 lit. e), f) GDPR). In the event of your objection, we will check whether the legal requirements for the processing of your data are met and, if this is not the case, we will refrain from any further processing of your data.
Right to lodge a complaint with the data protection supervisory authority, Art. 77 GDPR
You have the right to contact the competent supervisory authority of the Union or the Member States at any time regarding any violations of data protection regulations.
